Head of Technical – Personal Care

Our client is a leading provider of manufacturing, filling and packing services to the health and beauty industries. A vacancy has arisen for a Head of Technical – Personal Care to join their busy and hardworking team in St Leonards on Sea.

The ideal Head of Technical will have demonstrable experience within a laboratory or production environment, be SCS Qualified and be computer literate. As Head of Technical you will lead the company in the design, development and preparation of new product formulations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and customer requirements at all times. You will also ensure that a current, clear and accurate method of manufacture is available for all personal care products manufactured on site.

The ideal Head of Technical will hold the following skills and experiences:

  • Be SCS qualified or higher
  • Be IT literate and have excellent Microsoft office skills
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Experience within a laboratory or production environment
  • Team leadership experience

Your duties as a Head of Technical will include:

  • Leading in the formulation of cosmetic products such as creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, body scrubs, and fragrances for a wide variety of customers
  • Carrying out research into raw materials, both current and new, that can be incorporated into products
  • Maintaining an awareness of costs of raw materials and their subsequent impact on the finished products in relation to agreed price constraints for the product range and their impact on the profitability of the company
  • Prepare the required methods of manufacture for all Personal Care products developed and manufactured by the company
  • Training company operatives specifically responsible for the manufacture of products on both small and large scale production batches as required
  • Participating in the development of training programmes for company staff responsible for the manufacture of Personal Care products
  • Providing technical support to the production area during both trials and regular production runs
  • Supporting the sales team in customer meetings and provide a technical resource to advise on proposed briefs and also to suggest new ideas and concepts
  • Ensuring the timely preparation, and issue, of customer samples
  • Ensuring that laboratory staff correctly maintain the stock of raw materials required to provide prompt and effective samples
  • Regularly meeting with the representatives of raw material suppliers and ensure that he/she is fully aware of current industry developments and innovations
  • Ensuring that the Sales Team are kept aware of new opportunities and developments in the raw material market and how these may be utilised by the company
  • Working with the Sales Team to develop and maintain a range of ‘stock’ items that are available for selection by both existing and potential customers
  • Ensuring that direct reports receive suitable training and have a structured development plan at all times including personal targets and KPIs
  • Ensuring that direct reports receive regular reviews and a yearly appraisal in line with the Company’s Appraisal Scheme
  • Working closely with the Directors to build and develop the Technical Department (Personal Care) to ensure that it is able to meet both the current and future needs and requirements of the company
  • Ensuring that the Technical Department maintains an accurate Product Development Database for in-house formulated products
  • Ensuring that records of all work are accurately maintained and up to date
  • Managing the overall product testing programme within the department to ensure that agreed timetables are adhered to and effective communications are maintained at all times
  • Ensuring that the laboratory is maintained to a level compatible with industry standards at all times and to advise the Directors of any steps that should be taken to achieve or maintain these standards
  • Actively participate in ensuring that the company achieves, meets and maintains, the relevant standards related to practices, procedures and protocols to meet the requirements of the industry standards and accreditations
  • Working in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work legislation and the company’s environmental and ethical policies as well Good Manufacturing Practice and Good Laboratory Practices
