It might sound strange, but right now we’re seeing a growing number of good, reliable candidates struggling to secure consistent work — even though, on the surface, employers are still saying they can’t find the people they need.

So what’s going on?

From where we sit, working with local businesses across Hastings and the surrounding areas, there’s a clear mismatch between what candidates think employers want… and what employers are actually hiring for.

And that gap is causing frustration on both sides.

It’s Not Just About “Experience” Anymore

A lot of candidates still believe that more experience automatically makes them more employable.

Sometimes it does — but not always.

What we’re seeing more often is employers prioritising things like reliability, attitude, and flexibility over years on a CV. Especially in production, warehouse, and entry-level roles.

If a business needs someone who can turn up on time, work consistently, and slot into a team quickly, they’ll often choose that over someone with more experience but less certainty around those basics.

That can be a tough pill to swallow — but it’s the reality of today’s hiring market.

Application Habits Are Holding People Back

Another big issue is how candidates are applying for jobs.

We regularly see people:

  • Sending the same CV to every job

  • Applying for roles that don’t really match their skills

  • Missing key details that employers actually care about

  • Not responding quickly when contacted about work

None of these things feel major on their own — but together, they can make the difference between getting a call… or getting overlooked.

In a competitive market, small details matter more than ever.

Speed Is Becoming a Deciding Factor

One thing that’s changed significantly over the past couple of years is the pace of hiring.

Roles are getting filled faster — sometimes within days, not weeks.

That means candidates who are slow to respond, slow to register, or hesitant when offered shifts can quickly miss out.

We often see situations where two equally good candidates are available — and the one who engages faster gets the work.

It’s not always fair, but it is happening.

Flexibility Opens More Doors

Another trend we’re seeing locally is that the most successful candidates tend to be the most flexible.

That doesn’t mean saying yes to everything — but being open to:

  • Different shift patterns

  • Temporary roles that could lead to permanent work

  • Slightly different types of work than you’ve done before

Those who take this approach tend to build momentum quickly — and once you’re in work, it’s much easier to move into the role you really want.

A Final Thought

If you’re finding it harder than expected to secure work right now, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing anything “wrong”.

But it might mean it’s time to adjust your approach.

The candidates who are getting ahead at the moment are the ones who stay responsive, keep things simple, and focus on what employers actually need — not just what they think looks good on paper.

And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly where a good local recruiter can help.
