If you’re advertising a vacancy and waiting for the perfect CV to land in your inbox, there’s a good chance you’re only seeing part of the talent available.

It’s a common misconception that the best candidates are actively searching for a new role. In reality, many of the strongest people in the market are already employed. They’re performing well, valued by their employer and getting on with their day-to-day job. They aren’t spending their evenings scrolling through job boards.

That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t consider a move.

We regularly speak to people who aren’t looking for a new job but are open to hearing about the right opportunity. Perhaps they’re looking for a shorter commute, better career progression, a healthier working environment or simply a role where they feel their contribution will be recognised.

The difference is that they won’t necessarily apply for your advert.

This is where recruitment becomes much more than simply placing an advert online. It involves understanding what your business offers, identifying people with the right skills and experience, and having conversations that introduce opportunities they may never have discovered otherwise.

It’s also why speed matters.

We’ve seen employers spend weeks reviewing applications, arranging multiple interview stages and delaying decisions whilst waiting to see if someone “better” applies. Unfortunately, the strongest candidates rarely stay available for long. If they decide to move, they’re often interviewing with several employers at the same time.

Good recruitment isn’t about rushing into the wrong decision. It’s about recognising the right person when you meet them and moving efficiently enough that you don’t lose them to a competitor.

Of course, not every vacancy requires a proactive search. Some roles attract an excellent response through advertising alone. However, when you’re recruiting for specialist positions, experienced professionals or key members of your team, relying solely on job adverts can significantly reduce the quality of candidates you reach.

The best recruitment campaigns combine both approaches. They attract active job seekers while also engaging talented individuals who weren’t planning to move until the right opportunity came along.

At ASL Recruitment, that’s exactly how we approach many of our assignments. We don’t just wait for applications to arrive. We actively seek out the people who could make a genuine difference to your business.

Final Thought

The best candidate for your vacancy may never apply for your advert. The question is whether your recruitment process is capable of finding them anyway.
