One of the first things I ask candidates afterwards is, “How do you think it went?” It’s not because there’s a right or wrong answer. I’m interested in understanding how they felt, whether there were any questions they struggled with and, just as importantly, whether they still feel the role is right for them.
Employers are doing something very similar. They’re discussing how the interview went, considering whether the candidate would fit into the team and deciding whether they’d like to take things further.
This is where good communication becomes really important.
If you realise after the interview that the role isn’t quite what you expected, it’s absolutely fine to say so. Equally, if you’re excited about the opportunity, let your recruiter know. That feedback helps us have open and honest conversations with employers and keeps the process moving.
I’d also encourage candidates not to panic if they haven’t heard anything immediately. Sometimes employers need to interview several people before making a decision, and that can take longer than anyone would like. A delay doesn’t automatically mean the interview was unsuccessful.
One thing that does make a difference is responding promptly if your recruiter contacts you after the interview. Employers often have questions, want to arrange a second interview or need to discuss availability. The quicker we can speak to you, the easier it is to keep the recruitment process moving.
