Employers make decisions for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes another candidate has slightly more experience in a particular area. Sometimes an internal applicant is promoted. Occasionally the role changes altogether or is put on hold. None of those situations necessarily mean there was anything wrong with your application or interview.

That’s why it’s so important not to judge your own ability based on a single outcome.

I’ve spoken to candidates who were unsuccessful in one interview, only to secure an even better role a few weeks later. In fact, many people tell me afterwards that they’re glad the first opportunity didn’t work out because the position they eventually accepted suited them far better.

Every interview is also valuable experience. The more you attend, the more confident you become at talking about your skills, answering questions and understanding what employers are looking for. Even if the result isn’t what you hoped for, you’ve usually learnt something that will help next time.

If you’re working with a recruiter, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. We may not always receive detailed comments from every employer, but when we do, we’ll happily share them with you. Constructive feedback can be incredibly useful and often highlights small changes that make a big difference in future interviews.
