If you’re actively looking for a new job, there’s a good chance you’re speaking to more than one employer and possibly more than one recruitment agency. That’s completely normal. Nobody expects you to stop exploring other opportunities simply because we’ve submitted your CV for a vacancy.

What really helps, though, is keeping us informed.

You don’t need to give us a detailed list of every job you’ve applied for, but if you’re already at second interview somewhere or expecting an offer, that’s useful for us to know. It means we can manage expectations with our client and, where appropriate, explain that they may need to move quickly if they’re genuinely interested in you.

It’s particularly important to tell us if you’ve already applied directly to a company we’re discussing with you. Employers generally won’t want to receive the same candidate from two different sources, and it can create unnecessary confusion over who introduced you. A quick conversation beforehand avoids that completely.

Candidates sometimes worry that telling a recruiter about another opportunity will make us less interested in helping them. It really doesn’t. Our job is to help people find work, and we know we’re rarely the only conversation you’re having. We’d much rather know what’s happening than discover after arranging an interview that you’ve already accepted another job.

The same applies when your circumstances change. If you’ve decided to stay with your current employer, accepted another position or simply want to pause your job search for a while, tell us. There won’t be any hard feelings. In fact, it means we’ll know when it’s appropriate to contact you again rather than repeatedly calling about vacancies you’re no longer interested in.

Good recruitment depends on communication from everyone involved. We’ll do our best to keep you updated about the jobs we’re representing you for, and being open with us about what’s happening elsewhere helps us do that job properly.

Final Thought

You don’t have to choose one recruiter or one application at a time. Just keep everyone informed. A little communication can make the whole process much easier.
